Appliance to produce selectively compiled printed products (7) such as newspapers has a production belt (3) , control device (S) and discharge device to remove faulty printed matter. It contains a recognition device (6) which recognises and logs gaps (L) arising from discharged printed matter. The procedure to fill the gaps is to produce general printed matter (2) in defined quantities, to collect it in a buffer (13), recognise and register gaps, take from the buffer the quantity of general printed sheets required to fill the registered gaps and to put them in the registered gaps.
