The inspection system has an image recording device with multiple cameras arranged such that a part overlaps the image field of a former camera with a part of the image field of the latter camera, where a part of the inspection zone is detected. A part of the inspection zone is illuminated by one or more illumination modules. The cameras are connected with an image processing unit assigned to the camera. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an image data format for use in an inspection system; and (2) a method for detecting the position of a local image field of a camera.
