<p>Separate individual surfaces (21, 24, 25, 27, 29) of the cheeks or side surfaces (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14) of the crankshaft are hardened, excluding the concave transition radii (15) between shaft sections (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and adjacent cheeks. A non-contact hardening method is used. It employs a scanned laser- or electron- beam. Alternatively, electric arc- or induction hardening is used. Sections of outer circumferential cheek surfaces (21, 24, 25, 27) are hardened. Adjacent regions (29) of opposite end faces of the cheeks are hardened. Specific circumferential areas (21) of the cheeks are hardened. These have concave curvature and lie between convex circumferential sections with differing radii of curvature. Circumferential surface sections (21) lying between different regions of the cheeks are hardened. Circumferential sections (26) of the cheeks with depressions or cut-outs are hardened. Further circumferential sections (27) of the cheeks are hardened, where the spacings between circumferential areas and cylindrical peripheral surfaces (28) of an adjacent shaft section becomes very small. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding crank shaft.</p> |
