Water - soluble polymers containing neutralized carboxyl groups are prepared by converting a monomeric starting material containing at least 10 per cent of a monomeric nitrile which contains the CH2=C< group into a vinyl polymer in known manner and heating the resulting polymer in the presence of a quantity of alkali at least stoichiometrically sufficient to saponify the quantity of nitrile groups which corresponds to the minimum percentage of nitrile and of a quantity of water equal to between 1 and 2 molecular equivalents per equivalent of alkali. Polymers specified are those of acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. The reaction may be performed in the presence of an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, dioxane or acetone, which is capable of dissolving water and alkali but not the polymer containing neutralized carboxyl groups.
