The device (1) has a catalyzer (4) arranged in an exhaust gas line (2) of an exhaust gas section for passing an exhaust gas stream (3'). A branching device branches a portion of exhaust gas stream (3'') downstream of the catalyzer as a branch-exhaust gas stream (14). The branching device supplies the exhaust gas stream upstream of the catalyzer such that the branch-exhaust gas stream is passed through the catalyzer. The exhaust gas line is provided in a supply area of the branch-exhaust gas stream so that flow rate of the exhaust gas stream is increased. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an exhaust gas cleaning device.
