[Class 80 (ii).] In three-speed and reversing gearing for vehicles of the kind embodying an overrunning clutch operative for direct drive and middle speed, this clutch is adapted to be locked in middle speed to allow the engine to be used as a brake. Gear 32 can be thrust into clutch engagement at 42 with a clutch end of a pinion 13 fast on the clutch shaft 14 for direct drive, or into mesh with a countershaft gear 24 for middle speed. The overrunning clutch comprises a coil 37 arranged to slide axially with the gear 32, which is mounted on a round part 29 of the driven shaft 17. The coil 37 is fastened at 38 to the gear 32 and projects into a cup member 31 slidably splined on shaft 17 and constrained by means 35 to slide with the gear 32. A gear 30 which is slid to left and right to effect low speed and reverse, respectively, carries a clutch end 45 which is used, when gear 30 is in the neutral position shown, to lock the one-way clutch. The gear 32 is connected by a sleeve 33 to a clutch end 44 which turns clear of clutch end 45 when the gear 32 engages the gear 24 during middle speed with overrunning. To lock the clutch 37, the gear 32 is moved farther to the right, while still engaging the gear 24, until the members 44, 45 engage, thereby making the gear 32 rigid with the shaft 17. This locking movement is normally prevented by a stop 58 on a selector control lever 47 engaging a fixed stop 59. To lock the one-way clutch, the stop 58 must first be purposely raised by hand against a spring 57. The expanding of the coil 37 into oneway gripping engagement is started by a ball 39 between an inclined recess 40 in the coil and a hub projection 70 of the cup member 31. |
