PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine, capable of preventing excessive cooling of EGR gas during cooling of an internal combustion engine body. SOLUTION: In the engine 1 having an EGR gas flow passage 3b for guiding EGR gas to an intake manifold 6 provided on a cylinder head 8, a thermostat 10 is provided at the inlet or outlet of one coolant flow passage 9c of coolant flow passages 9c adjacent to the EGR gas flow passage 3b. The on-off valve of the thermostat 10 is automatically operated according to the temperature of coolant to stop flow of coolant to the coolant flow passage 9c during cooling of an engine body 2 and to permit the flow of the coolant to the cooling flow passage 9c during warming of the engine body 2.
