摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass material for press forming which provides an optical element having a sufficient optical performance without surface cracks, cloudiness, scratches, and the like even when the glass material contains a highly reactive component; and to provide an optical element having a sufficient optical performance without surface cracks, cloudiness, scratches, and the like and a method for manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The glass material for press forming comprises a core portion 1 composed of multicomponent optical glass and a surface glass layer 2 covering at least a region serving as an optical functional surface of the core portion 1. The surface glass layer 2 contains more than 90 mass% of SiO<SB>2</SB>and has a thickness less than 5 nm. A method for manufacturing a glass optical element is provided, which comprises heating the glass material and press forming the softened glass material by using a forming die. A press formed glass optical element is provided, which has the core portion 1 composed of multicomponent optical glass and the surface glass layer 2 covering at least an optical functional surface of the core portion 1.
