PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display having high luminance and contrast and superior display characteristics. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display includes a surface light source and a liquid crystal panel disposed on the surface light source and includes a liquid crystal cell and a polarizing plate layered on a surface in the surface light source side of the liquid crystal cell. The polarizing plate includes a polarizing film and a prism sheet, having a surface composed of prism-like projections, and the prism sheet is disposed with the surface composed of the prism-like projections facing the surface light source. The intensity distribution of light of the surface light source, which indicates the emission angle dependency of the intensity of emitted light of the surface light source, satisfies the conditions (1) and (2), where condition (1) is the distribution shows a maximum having the highest peak of the intensity of light in the range of -80°≤θ<-40° or 40°<θ≤80°, where θ represents an angle within a plane orthogonal to the ridge line direction of the prism-like projections, the angle formed by the normal direction of the emission surface of the surface light source and by the emission direction of the emitted light of the surface light source (where θ satisfies the relation: -90°≤θ≤90°); and condition (2), where the angle θa, at which the intensity of light exhibits a maximum in the peak and the angle θb, at which the intensity of light exhibits 1/2 of the maximum in the peak satisfy the expression:¾θa-θb¾<30°.
