381,108. Uniting or dividing by fusion. ZACK, M., 7<111>, Utrechter Strasse, Cologne, Germany. April 15, 1932, No. 10870. Convention date, April 17, 1931. [Class 83 (iv).] In electric arc welding or cutting by means of at least two electrodes of different materials producing arcs at least between themselves and the work, one serving for heating purposes and the other for adding material to the joint in the case of welding, a jet of water or steam is introduced into the arc, where it is decomposed by the heating electrode with the formation of a combustible gas such as hydrogen or acetylene so as to increase the heating effect. The heating electrode may consist of carbon and the other electrode of metal. The carbon electrode may contain compounds of alkali or alkaline-earth metals, such as carbonates, e.g. 20 per cent of limestone or strontium carbonate or 10 per cent of lithium carbonate. The metal electrode may contain a substance such as tungsten to serve as a catalyser in the decomposition of the water or steam and also to improve the welded joint. Specification 280,558, [Class 83 (iv), Metals, Working], is referred to.
|
