This light emitting device is provided with: a base substrate containing silicon, a plurality of sheet bodies formed in contact with the base substrate, and a plurality of group 3 to 5 chemical compound semiconductors that are lattice-matched or pseudo-lattice-matched with respective corresponding sheet bodies. A light emitting element that emits light in response to supplied current is formed on at least one of the plurality of group 3 to 5 chemical compound semiconductors. A current restricting element that restricts the current that is supplied to the aforementioned light emitting element is formed on at least one of the group 3 to 5 chemical compound semiconductors, from among the plurality of group 3 to 5 chemical compound semiconductors, other than the group 3 to 5 chemical compound semiconductor(s) where the light emitting element is formed.
