The method involves determining two parameter sets based on measurement data of an operating parameter of a vehicle, where the parameter sets represent two measures for efficiency of the vehicle with a preset configuration and a deviating configuration, respectively. The parameter sets are processed such that a virtual configuration is determined from the preset configuration and the deviating configuration. One of the parameter sets is determined by a preset simulation model, where a backward calculation model is used as the simulation model. The operating parameters are speed of a vehicle, an accelerator position, brake pedal position, engine characteristics range, movement of a transmission or a rotational speed of an engine of a vehicle. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for determining an optimized configuration of a vehicle (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for executing a method for determining an optimized configuration of a vehicle.
