ERROR CORRECTING METHOD AND DATA REPRODUCING APPARATUS

An error correcting process comprises: a data reproducing process in which record data, each of which consists of unit data each constituted by a plurality of bits, are sequentially read and reproduced from a recording medium, while the synchronization pattern included in each unit datum is being detected; error correcting processes in which a row-direction error correction and a column-direction error correction are performed at least once for an error correction code block in which the record data reproduced by the data reproducing process are arranged in a plurality of columns in the row direction; a determining process in which after the execution of the error correcting processes, it is determined whether any error-uncorrectable data are left; and a loss error correcting process in which if it has been determined, in the determining process, that some error-uncorrectable data are left, then a column-direction error correction is performed which regards, as lost data, the data constituting at least one row of the error correction code block, independently of the error correction result of the row-direction error correction.
