The device has a pinion (9) engaged in a tooth segment of a segment plate (6). A holding plate (5) is arranged parallel to another holding plate (4), and the segment plate is arranged between the two holding plates. The segment plate is pivotably supported in the former holding plate, and the pinion is supported in the former holding plate. A transfer module (14) is formed by the holding plates and the segment plate. The transfer module is connected with a backrest structure (15) i.e. light metal cast component, and a seat structure (16) of a seat. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting an inclination of a backrest of a seat of a motor vehicle.
