PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a short-arc discharge lamp with a negative electrode, supplying an emitter quickly and stably to a negative electrode tip facing an arc without draining an emitter source over a long period of time, and capable of preventing an increase of illuminance fluctuation. SOLUTION: In the short-arc discharge lamp in which a pair of negative electrode 20 and positive electrode 30 are arranged in opposition inside an arc tube 10, the negative electrode 20 consists of a body 21 made from a tungsten material containing an emitter, and a shaft 22, and the body 21 includes a narrow hole 26 extending inside the negative electrode 20 from its tip, an inner surface of the narrow hole 26 is provided with a non-carbonized part 28 in the vicinity of an opening and a carbonized layer 27 at a deeper site than the non-carbonized part 28.
