[Class 132 (i).] A rowing-machine of the kind in which the imitation oars are adapted to be pulled against a resistance is characterised by a spring friction clutch such that in one direction of motion the spring expands to give free movement and in the other contracts upon the member movable by the imitation oar to impart resistance to such movement. As shown, the sculling handle a is secured to a socket b rotatable freely in one direction upon the member c carried by the outrigger d. A helical spring e coiled within the socket b surrounds the member c and has one end f extended axially and passed through a hole in the upper part of the socket b. Movement of the handle a away from the user expands the spring e to give free movement, but movement towards the user contracts the spring e on the member c which is moved against the resistance provided by the friction material g, which resistance may be adjusted by the screw h. The socket b is secured on the member c by a bolt i.
