<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition that satisfies at least one characteristic or has an appropriate balance between at least two characteristics among the characteristics such as a high maximum temperature of a nematic phase, a low minimum temperature of a nematic phase, a low viscosity, an appropriate optical anisotropy, a large dielectric anisotropy, a small pretilt angle, a large specific resistance, a high stability to ultraviolet rays, and high stability to heat, and to provide an AM element having a short response time, a high voltage retention, a high contrast ratio, a long life, and the like. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition comprises a specific difluoroalkenyldicyclohexane compound having a low viscosity as a first component, a compound having a specific difluoromethyleneoxy bond and having a large dielectric anisotropy as a second component, and a specific terphenyl compound having a large optical anisotropy as a third component, and has a nematic phase.
