A liquid crystal panel (2) is provided with: a p-type liquid crystal material sandwiched between a pair of substrates (40, 20); pixel electrodes (13) which are provided on the same substrate (40) and are composed of comb-like electrodes; and a common electrode (14). The p-type liquid crystal material is aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface when an electric field is not applied. The electrode width of the comb-like electrodes is 5 µm or less, and the interval between the electrodes is 15 µm or less. The pixel electrodes (13) and the common electrode (14) apply an electric field parallel to the substrate surface onto the p-type liquid crystal material. A voltage of 7 V or more is applied to between the pixel electrodes (13) and the common electrode (14) when the liquid crystal panel is driven. The product of a dielectric constant anisotropy (?e) and a refractive index anisotropy (?n) of the p-type liquid crystal material is 0.9-2.5.
