<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultraviolet up-conversion composition allowing effective treatment of microorganisms in the surface, water, and air by absorbing visible light or infrared light in/outside of a room, and to provide an article, a method for inhibiting microorganisms etc., using the composition. <P>SOLUTION: The antimicrobial ultraviolet up-conversion composition includes an activator allowing absorption of visible light or infrared light and emission of electromagnetic waves having a wavelength in the ultraviolet region through the up-conversion, and a host substance. The antimicrobial ultraviolet up-conversion composition in which the activator is doped in the host substance is used to inactivate the microorganisms or inhibit the growth of the microorganisms.
