摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deposition to the inside of a reactor by effectively removing a polymerization solution, a catalyst component, etc., adhered to a foaming component in the early stages of oxidative polymerization. SOLUTION: In a method for producing polyphenylene ether, polyphenylene ether is produced by passing oxygen-containing gas (O) through a polymerization solution comprising a phenolic compound (M), an aromatic solvent (A), and a catalyst (C) to perform oxidative polymerization of the phenolic compound (M). First, a first polymerization solution composed of 13-25 pts.mass of the phenolic compound (M), 35-82 pts.mass of the aromatic solvent (A1), and 0.1-10 pts.mass of the catalyst (C) is prepared. The oxygen-containing gas (O) is passed through the first polymerization solution to perform oxidative polymerization of the phenolic compound (M). The liquid surface of the polymerization solution is adjusted to substantially exceed the upper end of the foam upon foaming in the early stages of polymerization when the foaming of the polymerization solution occurred in the early stages of oxidative polymerization is substantially subsided, by additionally adding 5-52 pts.mass of the aromatic solvent (A2) containing substantially no phenolic compound (M) during the oxidative polymerization. The oxygen-containing gas (O) is continuously passed through to perform the oxidative polymerization, thereby obtaining the polyphenylene ether withηsp/c of 0.3-1.0 dL/g.
