The amplifier has amplifier units (2, 3) arranged in a forward channel (DS) and a rear channel (US), respectively. A switch (8) is arranged in the rear channel and controlled by a monitoring unit (13). The monitoring unit monitors a signal level in the rear channel and closes the switch when the characterized utilized signal level is detected. The switch is opened when the signal level is not detected. The switch is arranged in the rear channel along signal flow direction behind or between the amplifier units. The monitoring unit includes a filter (4) for filtering an interference signal.
