The method involves adjusting an actual speed (Va) of a vehicle (F) to preset speed by controlling and/or regulating a drive strand and/or a brake mechanism. The preset speed of the vehicle is reduced below a desire speed (Vw) at upward gradient (S), where the preset speed corresponds to the desire speed in plane (E) and a downgrade gradient (G). A given speed is reduced at a preset value below the desire speed, where the value is a proportional portion of the desire speed or a fixed amount, and is provided by a vehicle driver.
