When an electrically powered travel priority mode is set and when a limitation mode is set as the control mode because operation of the engine (22) is required, the smaller threshold Peg out of the value (kw·Wout) determined by multiplying the output limitation Wout of a battery (50) by a conversion factor kw and a predetermined power Pset smaller than the value determined by converting the normal output limitation Wout is compared with a traveling power Pdrv*.  If the traveling power Pdrv* is equal to or smaller than the threshold Peg, the automobile is electrically powered to travel while the engine is idled.  If the traveling power Pdrv* is larger than the threshold Peg, the automobile is made to travel by the power from the engine.
