PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermistor element which ensures high air-tightness between the element body and the ambient air, allows processing at a relatively low temperature, have less reaction between the thermistor element and a coating material, can accurately detect temperatures ranging from a low temperature to a high temperature and have high stability, and to provide a method of manufacturing the thermistor element. SOLUTION: A thermistor element body 10 is coated with a first coating material 16 which covers the thermistor element body itself and electrode lines 12 of the thermistor body and contains colloidal silica with a sealing property as its main component and is further coated with a second coating material 18 whose thermal expansion coefficient is compatible with a heat-resistance lead line lines 14 connected with the electrode lines 12. The second coating material 18 contain Mg<SB>2</SB>SiO<SB>4</SB>and Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>as its main components. The second coating material 18 is covered with a third coating material 20 containing colloidal silica and iron oxide as its main components as a ceramic sealing material having heat and impact resistance properties.
