PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide drugs for preventing and treating neurocyte cell injury caused after transient ischemia. SOLUTION: There are provided drugs for treating or preventing cell injury caused by ischemia which contain, as the active ingredient, midkine family proteins; and drugs for treating or preventing ischemic diseases which contain, as the active ingredient, midkine family proteins. It has been clarified that midkine is efficacious in treating or preventing ischemic diseases and treating or preventing cell injury caused by ischemia and that it can remarkably prevent, for example, the onset of brain infarction which is a typical example of ischemic brain diseases. These remedies and preventives are efficacious against ischemic brain diseases such as brain infarction, transient cerebral ischemia and head injury. In addition, they are efficacious in treating and preventing, for example, cerebrovascular contraction following subarachnoid bleeding, Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia of Alzheimer's type, cerebrovascular dementia and other cerebrovascular diseases, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea and degenerative amyotrophic diseases.
