An optical navigation device with two main elements, an optical transmission element, which transmit light from an illumination source to a sensor via a mousing surface, and a housing unit. The optical transmission element may have an alignment shaft. Ideally the two main elements are assembled to a substrate by snap-fitting them together, rather than being affixed using an adhesive. An alignment shaft may be used to ensure that the optics are properly aligned to the substrate and the light source and sensor thereon. The device is operated by a user moving a finger over the mousing surface, which may be plastic and uses frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR). The mouse like cursor motion control device, may include a domed switch below the base, such that the optical transmission is the actuator interface to operate the switch.
