PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of detecting dust on contact glass located at a fixed reading position for reading a transported document, and preventing image degradation by the dust, and to provide an image formation device mounted with the same. SOLUTION: In this image reader for reading a transported document P at the reading position on the contact glass 41, when presence of dust at the reading position on the glass surface is detected using a transmission-type optical sensor arranged so that the optical path of detection light permeates in a main-scanning direction in reading the document, a movement means moves the contact glass 41 in a sub-scanning direction until it is not detected.
