PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device capable of obtaining light having good cross sectional shape. SOLUTION: The light emitting device 100 including a first region 10 and a second region 20 adjacent to the first region includes: a substrate 102 formed on the first region 10 and the second region 20; a first cladding layer 104, an active layer 106, a second cladding layer 108 which are formed above the substrate of the first region 10; a guide layer 120 and a core layer 122 which are formed above the substrate of the second region 20. The active layer has a first side 105 and a second side 107, at least a part of the active layer configures a gain region 160, an end surface 172 of the gain region is provided on at least the second side 107, and the core layer 122 has a third side 121 adjacent to the end surface 172 of the second side 107 side of the gain region and a fourth side 123 opposite to the third side 121. Light generated in the gain region advances in the core layer 122 from the end surface 172 of the second side 107, reaching at the forth side 123, and is emitted. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
