<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective display element which attains a high-contrast display. <P>SOLUTION: The display element includes: a cholesteric liquid crystal layer 28; first and second circular polarizing plates 22a and 22b; an illumination part 20 for emitting illumination light to the first circular polarizing plate 22a; and a reflection plate 18 disposed on the side opposite to the first circular polarizing plate 22a, of the illumination part 20. The first and second circular polarizing plates 22a and 22b are configured to transmit circular-polarized components having right and left directions different to each other. The retardation of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer 28 in a focal-conic state is set to be odd times as large as 1/2 of the center wavelength of the illumination light. Accordingly, a contrast relation between the pixels in a planar state and the focal-conic state in displaying using external light incident from the second circular polarizing plate 22b can be made equal to that in displaying using the illumination light, thus, the high contrast is achieved in either case of using the external light or the illumination light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
