PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield machine which does not need a large number of jacks. SOLUTION: This shield machine 200 includes a cutter head 1, a cutter head drive mechanism 2, a tubular shield 10D, a revolving propellant 20C, and a propellant drive mechanism 30. The revolving propellant 20C generates a propelling force forward F in the excavating direction by rotating so as to move in the peripheral direction slidably on the front end surface of a hexagonal segment 5C laid on the wall surface of a tunnel. The propellant drive mechanism 30 rotatingly drives the revolving propellant 20. Since a gap in which a new segment 5C can be installed is present between the revolving propellant 20C and the segment 5C already installed, a collector 50 picks the new segment 5C, and disposes in the gap.
