In processes for working up untanned hide material by forming a highly swollen fibrous paste by treatment with chemical swelling agents and, if desired, mechanical treatment and extruding this paste through shaping nozzles, the materials are kept at a temperature not above 22 DEG C. throughout the whole of the operation by carrying out the treatments in cooled machines and apparatus.
