PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for more accurately and simply assaying the phenobarbital-like toxicity of a chemical substance, and the like. SOLUTION: This method for assaying the phenobarbital-like toxicity of the chemical substance includes (1) the first process for measuring the expression level of a gene having a specific base sequence in a specimen originated from a mammal preliminarily contacted with the chemical substance, and (2) the second process for comparing the measurement value of the expression level of the gene in the specimen obtained in the first process with a control value of the expression level of the gene and evaluating the presence or absence or expression extent of the phenobarbital-like toxicity of the chemical substance in the specimen on the basis of the difference, and the like.
