PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an automatic transmission shortening the time required for shifting. SOLUTION: An ECU executes a program including a step S200 of starting the release of a C2 clutch and a B1 brake when carrying out the downshift of a transmission formed with gear ranges responding to the combinations of clutches and brakes to be engaged from a sixth gear range to a third gear range and starting release of the C2 clutch and a B3 brake when carrying out the downshift from a fifth gear range to a second gear range, and a step S220 of starting the engagement of a C1 clutch and the B3 brake when at least one of the C2 clutch or the B1 brake or at least one of the C2 clutch or the B3 brake is completely released (YES in S210), and downshift is carried out from the sixth gear range to the third gear range, and starting the engagement of the C1 clutch and the B1 brake when carrying out the downshift from the fifth gear range to the second gear range.
