PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve system for an internal combustion engine, reducing the degree of the variance of learning values of valve timing due to the clearance of a phase fixing mechanism. SOLUTION: The variable valve system includes: a valve timing variable mechanism 40 for changing the valve timing VT of an intake valve; a phase fixing mechanism 50 for fixing the valve timing VT at a middle angle VTmdl; and a learning means for setting as the learning value for the middle angle VTmdl the valve timing VT calculated based on a sensor output in a state with the valve timing VT fixed by the phase fixing mechanism 50. In the case where the valve timing VT is fixed by the phase fixing mechanism 50 during the drive of the valve timing variable mechanism 40 based on an advance angle command of the valve timing VT, the valve timing VT calculated based on the sensor output is set as a learning value VTG.
