PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a negative electrode for a lithium ion secondary battery for achieving high capacity and long life.

SOLUTION: The negative electrode for the lithium ion secondary battery is provided with a metal foil, protrusions made of a conductive matter on the metal foil, and thin films of a negative electrode active material formed on a surface of the metal foil, and on a top face as well as on side faces of each protrusion. Preferably, a height of the protrusion is 10 to 100 μm, a width of the same is 10 to 100 μm, and an interval of the protrusions is 10 to 100 μm. More preferably, the thin films of the negative electrode active material are formed of a silicon-based alloy, with a thickness of ≤3 μm.
