PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid intrusion of particles that are foreign to molten metal into the surface or into the near-surface zone of the cast metal strip. SOLUTION: The casting installation comprises two casting rolls and two lateral plates that together define a molten metal chamber and a casting gap. Molten metal is introduced into the molten metal chamber and forms in the molten metal chamber a molten metal bath with a molten bath surface that is open to the top. A cast metal strip is conveyed from the molten metal chamber and through the casting gap. A delimiting surface area (30) for collecting particles that are foreign to the molten metal is produced on the surface of the molten bath under the effect of at least one gas jet (20, 20a, 20b). The at least one gas jet (20, 20a, 20b) is directed together with the casting roll (1, 2) onto the molten bath surface in a direction of the gas jet axis (21) at a prescribed distance to the contact line (10, 11) of the molten bath surface (8).
