PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device for an elevator, dispensing with an emergency stop device and a mechanical speed regulator, and reducing power consumption and a hoistway space by reducing the weight of a car. SOLUTION: The safety device of the elevator includes: a plurality of hoisting ropes; a car speed detecting device for detecting the actual lifting speed of the car; a first brake device for mechanically braking the rotation of a sheave; a second brake device for mechanically braking the lifting and lowering of the hoisting rope; a first safety device for operating the first brake device and stopping the car when an output of the car speed detecting device exceeds a first prescribed value; a second safety device for operating the second brake device and stopping the car when the output of the car speed detecting device exceeds a second prescribed value; and a rope fracture detecting device for detecting the fracture of the individual rope, and operating the first and the second brake devices and stopping the car when a fracture of the individual rope is detected.
