PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To confirm the projecting state of a lock pin subjected to lock control, in a variable valve timing device (VCT) including an intermediate lock mechanism. SOLUTION: This variable valve timing device 18 is so configured that a VCT phase control characteristic with the lock pin 58 projected by a predetermined amount or more differs from a VCT phase control characteristic with no lock pin 58 projected, and when the lock pin 58 is not fitted into a lock hole 59 during a lock mode, a VCT phase fluctuation caused by cam torque when the lock pin 18 is projected by the predetermined amount or more is increased in comparison with the case that the lock pin 18 is not projected. Thereby, when the lock pin 58 is not fitted into the lock hole 59 during the lock mode, the reason is specified by determining whether the phase of the lock pin 58 is not matched with the phase of the lock hole 59 or the lock pin 58 is insufficiently projected according to the magnitude of the VCT phase fluctuation.
