PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making centralized control of an in-line element (Ei) by a line terminator (LT) in a tree network. SOLUTION: A plurality of network terminators (NT1, NT2, ..., NTi, ... and NTn) are coupled with a line terminator (LT) via one or a plurality of in-line elements (Ei) by dedicated branches and common branches. The present method includes the steps of: determining, by the line terminator (LT), a first plurality of bits (A) according to an identifier of a selected element (SEL-E) and a second plurality of bits (B) according to an identifier of a function (SEL-F) that is locally defined in advance; including the first plurality of bits (A) and the second plurality of bits (B) in a grant message (G); and forwarding the grant message (G) to the in-line elements (Ei).
