<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lithium secondary battery including a negative electrode in which an active material layer 2 containing active material for electrochemically occluding and releasing lithium is arranged on a collector 1, a positive electrode, and an nonaqueous electrolyte, the battery being improved in current collecting characteristics in an electrode and charge/discharge cycle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: When lithium is occluded and released, the active material layer 2 is expanded and contracted and a crack 4 is formed on the active material layer 2.
