<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce luminance flotation increase and coloring in the oblique direction in an IPS mode liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal layer 15 in which each absorption axis between a substrate 13 including a polarizing layer 11 on a light-input side and a substrate 14 including a polarizing layer 12 is approximately perpendicular, and liquid crystal molecules become substantially parallel with the substrates; and an illumination device 50, when the absorption axis of the polarizing layer 11 and an optical axis of the liquid crystal layer 15 are substantially perpendicular, optical compensating members 17, 18 are arranged between the polarizing layer 11 and the liquid crystal layer 15, between the polarizing layer 12 and the liquid crystal layer 15 is substantially anisotropic, in a case where the absorption axis of the polarizing layer 11 and the optical axis of the liquid crystal layer 15 are substantially horizontal, the optical compensating members 17, 18 may be provided between the polarizing layer 12 and the liquid crystal layer 15, between the polarizing layer 11 and the liquid crystal layer 15 is substantially anisotropic, the absorption axis of the polarizing layer 11 and slow axes of the optical compensating members 17, 18 are substantially perpendicular, each pixel satisfies nx≈ny≠nz, thickness-direction retardation for at least pixels of one color is different from other colors; and the thickness-direction retardation for red pixels is larger than 0 nm.
