PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device capable of suppressing the occurrence of color breakup in a field sequential method. SOLUTION: In a field period of selecting and outputting images with a common white component Wcom, a plurality of primary color light are emitted to make a multiple primary color display, and each primary color light is emitted from a backlight 3 in units of partial light emission regions 36 lower in resolution than display pixels. In this field period, the multiple primary color display of low color resolution can be made. In a field period of selecting and outputting images of differential signalsΔR,ΔG,ΔB of the respective primary color components, the images of the differential signalsΔR,ΔG,ΔB are selected and output in the units of the respective primary color components, and only the primary color light corresponding to each is emitted from the backlight 3. The luminance distribution of display images in alignment with a time axis within one frame period can converge on the field period of selecting and outputting the images with the common white component Wcom.
