PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To directly detect the temperature and pressure with high accuracy, in real time, by detecting the temperature of toner and pressing force in a nip area in a fixing process and using the result of the detection. SOLUTION: A fixing means heats and melts a toner image on a toner image bearing member and applies pressure to the surface of a recording medium, and thereby performs the compression bonding and fixing of the toner image thereon, or applies pressure and heat to an unfixed toner image transferred to the surface of the recording medium by a toner-heating member and pressure member. In the fixing means, a part of the surface layer of the toner-image bearing member, a part of the surface layer of toner heating member, and/or a part of the surface layer of pressure member are provided with a function layer for detecting at least temperature or pressure in a fixing nip location.
