The assembly (1) has an operating cylinder (2), and a damping piston (4) dividing the cylinder into lower and upper working areas (3a, 3b). An outward projecting piston rod (5) supports the piston, and a balancing area e.g. circular housing (11), is separated into partial areas (8a, 8b) by a separating element e.g. ring separating piston (7a). One of the partial areas is filled with gas. The balancing area coaxially surrounds the cylinder. One of the working areas is connected with the partial area by a flow connection (10), where the other partial area is filled with a damping medium.
