PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyphenylene ether copolymer having excellent heat resistance, fluidity, and mechanical properties such as a tensile strength and a tensile elastic modulus. SOLUTION: The polyphenylene ether copolymer has at least a specific 2,5-disubstituted phenylene structure and a specific phenylene structure as constituents and is characterized by having a thermogravimetrically-measured decomposition temperature of at least 390°C. A preferable copolymer has a 2,5-dimethylphenylene structure and a 2,6-dimethylphenylene structure and is obtained by oxidative-coupling polymerization of 2,5-dimethylphenylene ether and 2,6-dimethylphenylene ether using a copper-amine catalyst.
