PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a halogen compound useful for producing a fluorine-containing liquid crystal compound having a dicyclohexyl octafluorobutylene structure, an highly versatile, easy, efficient method for preparing the fluorine-containing liquid crystal compound using the compound, and an intermediate compound. SOLUTION: The halogen compound is represented by formula (I): R<SP>1</SP>-(A<SP>1</SP>-Z<SP>1</SP>)<SB>a</SB>-(A<SP>2</SP>-Z<SP>2</SP>)<SB>b</SB>-Ch-(CF<SB>2</SB>)<SB>4</SB>-X<SP>1</SP>(wherein Ch is a 1,4-cyclohexene group; X<SP>1</SP>is an iodine or bromine atom; a and b are each 0 or 1; R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom, halogen atom, -CN, -NCS, SF<SB>5</SB>, 1-18C alkyl group or a group represented by the formula: C1k; A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,3-cyclobutylene group, 1,2-cyclopropylene group, naphthalene-2,6-diyl group, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl group, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl group or 1,4-phenylene group; and Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each a single bond, 1-4C alkylene group or the like).
