The invention is directed to a corrosion protective layer, a process for providing an anodisable metal surface with a corrosion protective layer, a metal surface obtainable by such process, and the use thereof. The invention provides a corrosion protective layer, comprising the metal in oxidised form and an XyOz network, wherein said layer is essentially free of hexavalent chromium, and wherein y is 1-3, z is 1-3, and X is chosen from the group consisting of Si, Al, Ti, Zr, Ce,Mo and Mg.
