Disclosed is an additive for a coating material, which is an additive for obtaining an aqueous coating material that has an excellent balance among all the properties such as weather resistance and surface tackiness and is capable of forming a coating film that has excellent water resistance and contamination resistance. Also disclosed is an aqueous coating material which contains the additive for a coating material. Specifically, the coating material contains an additive for a coating material which contains (A) an aqueous resin that is obtained by polymerizing (a) a polymerizable unsaturated monomer. The (A) aqueous resin has an acid value of 20-60 mgKOH/g, and the (a) polymerizable unsaturated monomer contains (a1) a monomer that has a hydroxyl group and an ethylenic double bond. Consequently, the coating material has an excellent balance among all the properties such as weather resistance and surface tackiness, and is capable of forming a coating film that has excellent water resistance and contamination resistance. The (a) polymerizable unsaturated monomer preferably contains (a2) a monomer that has an alkoxysilyl group and an ethylenic double bond. The additive for a coating material can be used as a contamination resistance-providing agent.
