PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of installing an elevator in an existing building which can extremely shorten a construction period for newly installing the elevator. SOLUTION: This method of installing an elevator in an existing building includes a stairway modification step S1 of modifying one stairway lower half part 47 of the folded stairway 4 of an existing building 1 which extends from the downstairs to a landing 41 into a straight stairway 76 and also modifying the other stairway upper half part 48 which extends from the landing 41 to the story to be modified into an exterior corridor 77 communicating with the entrance of the building 1 and an elevator installation step S2 of installing an elevator 2 at the front end of the exterior corridor 77. The stairway modification step S1 includes a stairway removal step S14 for removing the folded stairway 4 and a stairway-corridor construction step S15 of constructing the straight stairway 76 and the exterior corridor 77 after the stairway removal step S14. In the stairway removal step S14, the folded stairway 4 is separated from the building 1, and cut into the stairway lower half part 47 and the stairway upper half part 48 at the landing 41, and each of the half parts is unloaded.
