Provided are a method for easily collecting a sufficient amount of peritoneal mesothelial cells and the collected peritoneal mesothelial cells. Also provided is a peritoneum-protecting agent which comprises said peritoneal mesothelial cells as the active ingredient, or a material for regenerative medicine which comprises said peritoneum-protecting agent. A sufficient amount of peritoneal mesothelial cells can be easily collected by selecting epithelioid-shaped cells, either morphologically or using a marker that is expressed on the cell surface as an indication, from among cells in a peritoneal dialysis waste fluid obtained from a patient undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The peritoneal mesothelial cells thus obtained exert peritoneum-protecting effects, i.e., effects of protecting the peritoneum from adhesion, thickening, damages and so on, and, therefore, can be used as a peritoneum-protecting agent or a material for regenerative medicine.
